Participating in the Roadeo

All Florida transit agencies are welcome to participate in the Roadeo. Transit agencies are not required to have a membership with the Florida Public Transportation Association.

Registration, orientation, training, written tests and the Friday evening reception and Saturday awards banquet will be held at the Southbank Hotel. All competitors should report to the Southbank Hotel Jacksonville Riverwalk on April 19 at 11:00 AM for their mandatory orientation meeting.

The Saturday competition will take place at JTA-Myrtle Campus, 100 N Myrtle Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32204. Transportation from the host hotel to the JTA facility will be provided.

SPECIAL BONUS

FIXED ROUTE

The winners of both the Fixed Route Bus and Maintenance Technician competitions will be sent at no expense to compete in the 2024 APTA International Bus Roadeo to be held April 26-30, 2024 in Portland, Oregon.
NOTE: To participate in the APTA International Bus Roadeo the competitors’ transit system must be an APTA transit system member. Additionally, APTA Bylaws state that APTA Management Company or State Association membership shall not take the place of the transit system membership. All registrations will be verified for membership and are subject to cancellation.

PARATRANSIT

Paratransit winners of the cutaway competition will be sent at no expense to compete in the 2024 National Community Transportation Roadeo sponsored by the Community Transportation Association of America (CTAA) to be held June 8-9, 2024 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
NOTE: To participate in the CTAA National Community Transportation Roadeo the competitors’ transit system must be a CTAA transportation provider member. All registrations will be verified for membership and are subject to cancellation.

STATUS AND DEFINITIONS

In order to participate in the Florida Triple Crown Roadeo, there are certain required qualifications. Transit agencies are expected to follow eligibility and enforce these rules and regulations.

Operator (all categories)

Contestants must be employed at a public transit agency as a paid or volunteer driver engaged in demand-response or fixed route service for at least one year prior to the Roadeo. Operator contestants must have performed job duties (transporting passengers) for at least fifty (50) percent of their time during the twelve (12) months prior to the competition. Supervisors, dispatchers, clerks, training instructors, office workers, and hostlers are not eligible to compete as Operators.

(Fixed Route) Maintenance Team Members

Team members must be maintenance personnel (i.e., mechanics, cleaners, hostlers, etc.) who in regular work duties maintain, service or move buses. The Maintenance Team or Technician must have performed bus maintenance technician duties for at least fifty (50) percent of their time during the twelve (12) months prior to the competition. Drivers, training instructors, supervisors and any other employee not engaged in a bus maintenance related job are not eligible to participate in the Maintenance division.

(Paratransit) Maintenance Competitors

Each paratransit technician must be an employee who in regular work duties maintains, services or moves buses. Drivers, training instructors, supervisors and any other employee not engaged in a paratransit maintenance related job are not eligible to participate in the Paratransit Maintenance division.

Length of Employment

Participants must have worked at a public transit agency as a full-time or part-time employee for no less than one (1) year prior to the date of the Roadeo. The one (1) year of employment can come as the result of work performed at a public transportation agency other than the one the driver or technician is currently employed at. Participants cannot have been compensated for and/or functioning as an instructor/trainer/supervisor for sixty (60) days or more, twelve (12) months prior to the competition.

Work Attendance Record

Participants must meet the local agency’s guidelines for attendance. The following recommendations serve as a guideline:

1. Participants should NOT have more than three (3) unauthorized absences during the twelve (12) months prior to the competition.
2. Participants have NOT been suspended from duties for punitive actions during the twelve (12) months prior to the competition.
3. Participants have NOT been suspended for punitive actions during the twelve (12) months prior to the competition.
4. Participants have NOT had a preventable accident twelve (12) months prior to the competition

Participation Fees

NOTE: In the event that any of the operator competition events do not have a minimum of (6) registrants, that event will be cancelled. In the event of a cancellation, registered contestants will be given the opportunity to compete in another division or receive a refund of their registration fee.

SPONSORED Registration – $150

The following provides a listing of eligible “Sponsored Registrants” from each agency:

Paratransit Division – Operator and Paratransit Maintenance Classes

  • Each transit agency is eligible for up to four (4) sponsored registrations – two operator participants and two agency support/supervisor representatives.
  • The Paratransit Maintenance competition will again take place, in which up to two (2) paratransit maintenance technicians from each transit agency are eligible to compete on an individual basis.

Fixed Route Division – Operator and Fixed Route Maintenance Classes

  • Fixed Route agencies are permitted one operator participant and one supervisor.
  • For the Maintenance Technicians, each FPTA transit agency can register up to three (3) fixed route maintenance technicians, up to two (2) paratransit maintenance technician, and one (1) support person.

Sponsored registration is provided to most participants and agency representatives and reduces the registration fee to just $150. This fee includes all scheduled Roadeo meals, including the Saturday evening awards banquet, PLUS two hotel nights. Sponsored registrants are responsible for their travel, non-scheduled meals, guest tickets (when applicable) and incidental expenses.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS INCLUDED

Roadeo event coordinators will make a reservation for all sponsored registrants (Friday and Saturday nights), as this is included in your sponsored registration fee. Reservations will not be made without a registration.

Non-Sponsored Registration – $225

The non-sponsored registration fee for the Roadeo is available to additional participants, above the allotted number of eligible contestants, as well as judges and other attendees. If you are already attending the Roadeo as an exhibiting or sponsoring vendor representative you do not need to pay this additional fee. Vendors must be an FPTA member to participate.

This fee includes all scheduled Roadeo meals, including the Saturday evening awards banquet.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS
Non-sponsored attendees are responsible for making their own lodging reservations and for all other expenses (travel, hotel, incidentals, etc.).

Information on the hotel registration details will be provided to you upon receipt of your registration.

Family Members and Guests

The Roadeo competition is always free to watch for family members and/or guests, but meals at the event are NOT included. If you have a family member/guest(s) attending, and they want to participate in meals, they MUST HAVE A PAID EXTRA TICKET.

During the registration process please indicate if you will be needing extra tickets for family member/guest(s). You will be contacted prior to the event with purchase information. NOTE: Extra meal tickets are non-refundable.

These are the events/meals and their prices, including a Combo Packet of all four tickets:

    • Friday Evening Reception – $30 each
    • Saturday Breakfast – $25 each
    • Saturday Lunch – $25 each
    • Saturday Awards Banquet – $55 each
    • Combo Packet (all four tickets) – $120 each
